If I’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that face-to-face communication, whether it’s in somebody’s office, or on Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, or whatever your platform of choice is, is essential for project success.
You’ve got to go over specifications and details for every single job. Getting accurate specs and the right price to deliver exactly what you need or want won’t happen without it.
It’s not enough to just write down dimensions and substrate specs or even show 3D comps; especially for a complicated project, but honestly, for any project.
Why Project Specifications Require Real Conversations
In the pre-COVID world, clients and salespeople met regularly. But during and after COVID, a lot changed. People started working from home, using online tools, and leaning on email or text for communication. The problem? A lot of critical details get missed.
Project specifications deserve face-to-face communication, whether in person or online.
This is why we show color proofs and blue lines. It’s just not enough to send a PDF. Many times, people need to hold something in their hands. We’re a visual and tactile species, which is why printing is still alive and thriving.
A simple PDF might be fine if the project has been produced before, but for new or complex jobs, interaction between people is the key to success.
A Real-World Lesson in Miscommunication
I learned this the hard way recently. We were producing a relatively simple project with decent specs, but the team had a complete disconnect on how to produce it and what the actual cost would be.
I thought 3D mock-ups and written specs would get the job done. I was wrong. A short Teams call cleared everything up for everyone involved.
It might not be trendy in today’s remote-first world, but a few minutes of face time can save hours of back-and-forth. It makes all the difference in creating and executing a successful project.
Final Takeaway: Be Bold, Get in Front of People
Whether you’re in sales or on the client side, the value of face-to-face communication is priceless. Be bold, get in front of people. Your projects (and your stress levels) will thank you.
